Annual vs Single Trip Travel Insurance: Which Should You Buy?
What is single trip travel insurance?
Single trip cover protects you for one journey, from the day you leave until the day you return. You choose the destination and dates when you buy. It’s the simplest option and usually the cheapest if you only travel once.
What is annual multi-trip travel insurance?
Annual multi-trip cover lasts 12 months and covers every trip you take in that time, up to a maximum number of days per trip. You pay once, and you don’t have to buy a new policy each time you go away.
Annual vs single trip: a quick comparison
| Factor | Single trip | Annual multi-trip |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | One or two holidays a year, or one long trip | Frequent travellers and people with several short breaks |
| Cost | Cheaper for one short trip | Often better value over several trips |
| Trip length | Set by the dates you choose, often up to a long maximum | Capped per trip, commonly around 31 days |
| Admin | New policy for each trip | Buy once, renew yearly |
| Flexibility | Tailored to the trip | Covers trips you haven’t planned yet |
When annual travel insurance is worth it
- You take two or more trips a year, including short city breaks.
- You travel for work as well as leisure.
- You like booking last-minute getaways without arranging cover each time.
- You’re a couple or family who travel together often. Family and couple annual policies can be good value.
When single trip is the better choice
- You only go away once a year.
- Your trip is longer than the annual policy’s per-trip limit.
- Your destination, activities or medical history push the annual premium well above a single trip quote.
- You want cover tailored to one specific trip, such as a cruise or a ski holiday.
A simple rule of thumb
Get a single trip quote for your next holiday and an annual quote at the same cover level and excess. Multiply the single trip price by the number of trips you expect to take. If that total is higher than the annual price, annual cover is probably better value. If any planned trip is longer than the annual per-trip limit, annual cover is the wrong product for that trip.
Things to check on an annual policy
- Maximum days per trip. Many policies cap trips at around 31 days.
- Trips already booked. Cancellation cover on some annual policies applies only to trips booked after the policy starts.
- UK trips. Check whether trips within the UK are included and whether a minimum number of nights applies.
- Geographical area. Europe-only policies are cheaper than worldwide, and the USA is often priced separately. See our guide to travel insurance for the USA.
- Add-ons. Winter sports, cruises and gadgets are often optional extras.
- Age and renewal. Premiums can rise at renewal, and some policies reprice at certain age bands.
- Medical conditions. You must declare them, and annual premiums can rise sharply. See travel insurance with pre-existing conditions.
Do you already have cover?
Before buying either type, check whether a packaged bank account or credit card already includes travel insurance. Our guide to bank account travel insurance explains what to look for.
Annual vs single trip FAQs
Is annual travel insurance cheaper than single trip?
It depends on how often you travel. If you take two or more trips in a year, annual cover is often better value. For a single short holiday, a single trip policy is usually cheaper.
What is the maximum trip length on an annual policy?
Each policy sets its own limit, and many standard annual policies cap each trip at around 31 days. Check the wording, because a longer trip may need single trip cover.
Does annual travel insurance cover trips within the UK?
Often yes, but not always. Some policies only cover UK trips that include a minimum number of nights or paid accommodation, so check the policy wording.
Does annual cover protect trips I booked before I bought the policy?
Not necessarily. Cancellation cover on some annual policies applies only to trips booked after the policy starts. If you have already booked a trip, check this before you buy.
Can I buy single trip cover for a long trip and annual cover for short ones?
Yes. Combining one single trip policy for a long trip with cheaper cover for short trips can work out less than upgrading an annual policy to a longer trip limit.
The bottom line
Count your trips, check their length, then compare an annual quote with the combined cost of single trip policies. Read the policy wording for trip limits and exclusions before you buy. If you’re weighing up a specific insurer, see our Allianz travel insurance guide.
