Allianz Travel Insurance UK: What You Need to Know in 2026
Is Allianz travel insurance available in the UK right now?
Allianz Assistance is the UK brand of AWP Assistance UK Ltd, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. At the time of writing, the company says it has temporarily stopped providing travel insurance policies while it upgrades its offers.
If you already hold a policy, you’re still protected. Single Trip and Annual Multi Trip policies bought before 25 September 2025 are covered until they expire.
Availability can change, so check the Allianz Assistance website for the latest before you rely on this.
What Allianz travel insurance offered
When it was on sale, Allianz Assistance’s range was built around a few simple options:
- Single trip cover for one holiday or business trip. Single Trip policies were available to people aged 80 and under.
- Annual multi-trip cover for people who travel more than once a year. It covered every trip in the policy year, subject to a maximum trip duration, whether in the UK or abroad.
- Three levels of cover, so you could trade price against benefit limits.
- Optional extras, including Sports and Cruise add-ons.
- Business travel insurance for frequent work travellers.
Standard cover included medical expenses, trip cancellation, delays, lost or stolen baggage and personal liability.
What wasn’t covered: pre-existing medical conditions
Allianz Assistance stated that it was unable to provide policies covering pre-existing medical conditions. If you have a condition, you’d need a specialist insurer anyway. Single and annual cover sold elsewhere often requires you to declare conditions to get valid cover.
Annual or single trip: which is cheaper?
The same logic applies to any insurer:
- Two or more trips in 12 months? Annual cover is often better value.
- One short holiday? Single trip is usually cheaper.
- Long trips? Check the per-trip day limit. Annual policies commonly cap each trip at around 31 days, and a longer trip may need single-trip cover.
- Couples who travel separately? A couple’s annual policy can beat two single policies.
Check you don’t already have cover
Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance. Some packaged bank accounts have used Allianz Assistance as the administrator. Before buying anything, check:
- Your packaged bank account benefits, including the trip length and age limits.
- Whether cover applies to you and everyone travelling with you.
- The excess and medical limits, which are often lower than a standalone policy.
- Whether you need to declare medical conditions to the account’s insurer.
Packaged cover can be a useful safety net, but it’s often basic. Check the limits against your trip.
How to choose an alternative to Allianz
Compare these points, not just the headline price:
- Medical cover limit. Higher matters for the USA, Canada and long-haul destinations.
- Excess. A cheap policy with a high excess can cost more on a claim.
- Cancellation limit. Make sure it covers your total prepaid costs.
- Baggage and valuables limits. Single-item limits are often low.
- Exclusions. Look at pre-existing conditions, alcohol, and activities such as skiing and scuba diving.
- Trip duration and age limits.
- FCA authorisation. Always check the insurer or broker on the FCA Register.
Use a comparison site, then read the policy documents (the IPID and full wording) before you buy.
Allianz travel insurance FAQs
Is Allianz travel insurance any good?
It has been a well-known name in the UK, but you can’t currently buy a new policy direct, so the better question is whether an alternative suits your trip.
Does Allianz travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Not directly: Allianz Assistance says it can’t currently provide cover for them. A specialist insurer is the route.
Is my existing Allianz policy still valid?
Yes, if you bought it before the cut-off dates, it stays in force until it expires. Contact Allianz Assistance if you’re unsure of your policy’s status.
Can I buy Allianz annual multi-trip insurance now?
Not directly at the time of writing. Check the Allianz Assistance site for updates.
Do I need travel insurance for Europe?
The bottom line
Allianz travel insurance has a good name, but new policies aren’t currently on sale direct in the UK. If you have an existing policy, you’re covered until it expires. If you’re buying now, compare medical limits, excess, exclusions and trip-length caps across a few insurers and read the wording.
