Phones, laptops, cameras and drones are some of the most expensive things we take on holiday, and the most commonly stolen. Standard policies often cover them only up to low limits. Here’s how to make sure your kit is protected.
Single-item limits
Most policies set a maximum payout for any one item, often much lower than the cost of a modern phone or camera, plus an overall baggage limit. If your phone costs more than the single-item limit, you’ll only get up to the limit, less the excess. Always check these figures before you buy.
Common exclusions
- Unattended items. Items left on a beach, table or in a car are often not covered.
- Checked baggage. Some policies exclude or limit valuables in the hold.
- Wear and tear, and accidental damage in some policies.
- Lack of proof. You may need receipts or evidence of ownership.
See common exclusions.
Cameras and photography kit
Professional or high-value cameras and lenses often exceed standard limits. Check whether each item can be listed, and whether commercial use is excluded. Specialist camera insurance may be better for expensive kit.
Drones
Many travel policies don’t cover drones, either for loss and damage or for liability if you cause injury or damage. Some exclude them altogether. Rules on flying drones vary by country, and flying without the right permission can invalidate cover and lead to fines. Check local rules and your policy before you go.
